Sub-ter-ain Frequencies is a live multimedia electric/acoustic composition that utilizes MAX/MSP, Pro-tools, Reason, and Sibelius for live electronic sequencing and playback. The piece utilizes 5.1-surround sound technology in conjunction with video and lighting. The piece takes full advantage of the idea of spatial placement of sound textures in an antiphonal environment of 5.1 surround sound while presenting the audience members with visuals that complement the musical ideas.

The composition incorporates NYC subway station ambience and sound, pre-recorded by the composer. These sounds are edited, sequenced, pitch shifted, reversed, and processed with effects to produce an arrangement of steam, screeches, and metallic textures. The piece uses these sounds as melodies and rhythmic motives to form the sound fx into music.

As the composition progresses the musicians navigate their way through the different soundscapes using their instruments to harmonize the setting. The electric bass, which is directly link with MAX/MSP to trigger voices in the subway terminal, is accompanied by the bass clarinet over a droning E flat tone in the terminal. The turntables, buckets and pans creates percussive and melodic textures over a live sequenced drumbeat. Reason is used over this part to chop samples into tones, which are then arranged into figures within the subway car.

The piece also uses video and lighting to amplify the concepts created within the music. All video was pre-recorded at the time the audio was being recorded. The video mimics as well as complements the soundscapes within the composition.
